This iconic structure is situated on the green in the centre of the village. It was the initiative of Gawcott WI when there was a national WI concern regarding the closure of libraries and thought to be an appropriate memorial to the Gilbert Scott family – George Gilbert Scott, the prolific Gothic revival architect, being born in the village in 1811. After much fundraising and application for grants the phone box was delivered with a heavy duty crane lifting it into position in May 2012. It was fitted with shelving, filled with books for adults and children and officially opened during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth 11 in June 2012. It can be accessed to take and/or return books – no charge – and has been a great facility for the village, which is well used. It is surrounded by three flower troughs and is managed by the Parish Council and Community Group with a weekly rota of volunteers who open and close it and keep in good order.
